It is time to take an Annual Business Audit. As we approach the end of the year, it is a critical time for business owners to assess where they are and where they want to be. One of the most important elements of success is to know exactly where you are in any given moment in time. I am going through this process with my own business as well with many of my clients. I would like to share it with you.
My experience has led me to the conclusion that it is highly important to do my Annual Business Audit before we are taken “hostage” by the holiday spirit. Although there is a lot of festivity, it also comes with a notion of despair and hopes. We say “hope is not a management strategy”. If you take care of your business you will enjoy the holiday with much more satisfaction and freedom. It does not have to be a complex process. The simpler it is the most powerful the outcome will be.
Let’s do it following these steps:
What is my score? – Look to see how you did against your plan – What worked and what did not. You can learn as much about what not to do as well as what to do. Be authentic and straight, tell the truth. As my late business partner used to say; “The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off”.
Create an Accomplishments Inventory – It is often the one thing that we overlook, skip and or undermine in the course of everyday life, especially the high achievers among us: acknowledging our accomplishment that is. We have a universal fundamental habit to look at that which was not accomplished, missed and or missing. Although there is nothing wrong with this approach, it can somewhat diminish our ability to operate with self-generated power and freedom. This exercise is not designed to boost your ego or to pat ourselves on the back (Although we all need it from time to time), it is designed merely to acknowledge what is so, the way that it is and the way that it is not.
- What I have intended to accomplish in my business this past year and I DID?
- What I have intended to accomplish in my business this past year and I DID NOT?
- What are some of the accomplishments I have had in my business this past year that I did NOT intend or plan for?
Face-Up and Clean-Up in order to be complete – make sure you take the responsibility to clean up any broken promises, incomplete actions, undelivered communications, unfulfilled intentions. To claim your power you need to create the state of being complete. Without being complete there is no new beginning and the world will not listen to you powerfully.
Create a new BHAF (Big Hairy Audacious Future) for your business – be bold, dream far and play big, it beats the alternative. It is your business and your future. Makes it as small or as big as you want to; you are the only limit, there are no other limits. The world rewards boldness.
Money makes the world (businesses) go around – A car without fuel is no good to anyone. Make sure your tank is full. Budget yourself for success and not for failure. A business is a living entity that has needs. Like a tree, if you want to pick up the fruit; you need to water the tree. If you take care of your business, your business will take care of you. A future without resources to support it is just a “Pipe Dream”. A vision without execution is just an illusion.
Share your Future – The more people you tell and share your new future with, the bigger the support you will get (even if you do not what it at time). Broadcast your future from the top of your lungs and make it as public as possible. It will far easier for you to fulfill it then cleaning up the mess when you did not.
Rearrange your Committed Environments – As we have stated over and over again, unless your environment is willing to become a Committed Environment in order to support the fulfillment of your new BHAF it will be a struggle. Ask yourself, are my environments realigned and conditioned to support my BHAF?
The last test is to answer the following: Am I inspired to give 100% of myself to my new BHAF? If you can’t authentically as a matter of your word, say yes; go through the steps until you do.
